southland opera - reviews

We'll happily talk for days on the reasons why you might be interested in experiencing a Southland Opera performance. But our words could not better the heartfelt sentiments of those impartial judges who have been there and seen for themselves; people of all origins who sat eagerly in the hushed audience, watched the curtain rise with the music and felt a happiness warm them as the excitement began.

The few select testimonials that follow are from some very special Southland patrons. The sources vary in age as much as they do in theatre arts experience. You might observe from these writings that opera can be wonderfully beneficial and enjoyable for people of all ages and backgrounds. We agree with that and dare to add--especially when it's Southland Opera!

"Thank you so much for coming to our school and including us in your performance schedule. Children need exposure to the performing arts and the production Stories Come Alive served as a wonderful introduction."
--Sharon Richter-Rosas, Aldama School

"I liked your songs because they made me realize that I like opera."
--Marlon, 4th grade

"Noriel and Parkin also incorporated such elements as the importance of doing homework, geography, foreign language and the love of reading as well as what goes into putting on a show."
--Peggy Blizzard, Irvine World News

"From the moment the presentation started, we knew that we had hit a home run! The students as well as the staff members were all captivated by the performers and the message that they were delivering."
--Eader Elementary PTA

"I learned that you should never smoke."
--Kevin, 5th grade

"I must write you a note to tell you what a smashing success your program last night was! And such a lovely program--one of the most interesting and beautiful we've had in ages."
--Janet Loranger, V.P. Programs, Opera 100

"(Amahl and the Night Visitors is,) Uniformly well-acted and skillfully sung, the production is sentimental without being kitschy, reverent without being preachy, innocent without being naive."
--Peter LeFevere, Orange County Register (read the full review)

"I had the time of my life. Please come again, it was great!"
--Joshua, 4th Grade Student

"Out of 54 performers on the Center's roster, Southland Opera was the second highest booked performer in their first season with us and have earned rave reviews from the participating schools. We look forward to another banner year with Southland Opera."
--Barbara Halford, Coordinator of From The Center Programs,
Orange County Performing Arts Center, Costa Mesa, CA

"A sincere thanks for a wonderful morning... The children loved it and their auditorium manners proved it. You have a wonderful array of music and you seem as if your heart is in every piece. "
--Michael J.Jeffers, Harrison K-8 LEARN School

"Watching the faces of the children as they sat hushed and attentive, was a reward in itself. And the anti-smoking message in The Night Harry Stopped Smoking was not lost on the audience in any way, as proven by the poignant question and answer session that followed."
--Mark Alderton, B&F Interactive

"I loved your opera and I loved your voices. The best part of the story is The Beauty and The Beast."
--Yahaira, 4th Grade Student

"Your mix of operatic and famous musicals' treatments of several stories already well known by school children, plus your outstanding costumes, created a program that really held the interest of all. NO ONE left your presentation saying, 'boring.'"
--Peter C. Jensen, Aldama Elementary School

"That was an interesting show. That was the best show I ever saw. I wish I could be one."
--Karen, 2nd Grade Student

"My class of kindergartners and I, along with my assistant and our student helper, enjoyed this performance immensely. This was the first such experience for all my students who would otherwise not have been able to savior opera music. We had a discussion after the performance and everyone said that they loved the show. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and keep up the good work."
--Greg Mamian, Fair Elementary School
